Victory Park Playspace
Castlemaine, Mount Alexander Shire Council, 2017
The Victory Park Play Concept is focused on ‘Celebrating Peace’, and associated themes of reconciliation and freedom. These themes are referenced throughout the site in the celebration of raw elements and emergent diversity within the proposed play environment. Natural looking play structures and indigenous planting contrast comfortably against the heritage adornments and exotic planting palette that surround the space.
The proposed playspace site has a long sweeping vegetated edge bordering the grassy parkland – the border between local and exotic, home and away, known and unknown. A focal point on this wild edge is a large feather-shaped bridge, symbolising peace and pacifism during wartime. Adjacent, shelter and BBQ area become part of the play space celebrating the great Aussie peacetime pursuit of the outdoor barbeque.
Landscape play elements carry the peace theme in their form and detail. Growing steel structures, seating logs, and totem poles throughout the site provide moments for children to discover delicate details and peaceful respite from the more active parts of the playspace. It is also proposed that bulbs are planted where the playspace once stood to celebrate loss, memory, emergence and inevitable change.
